About UB Women's Hockey

2010-2011 University at Buffalo Lady Ice Bulls

The original UB Freeze Women's Hockey program was founded in 1997 as a club sport for UB. The founders were Karianne Paolo and coach Jim Henry. Karianne loved playing ice hockey with younger kids and decided that with the amount of students that attended UB, there had to be enough girls to start a hockey team. The first few years money was hard to come by and the team didn't get any support from the school. So the team relied on fund raising to cover the expensive costs of playing Ice hockey. In 2001 the team gained support and funding from the school and became recognized as the schools womens ice hockey team. In 2001 the team moved on to the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) . The ACHA is a non-scholarship hockey league that plays at  Division 1 and Division 2 levels. The league was started in 1991 for players that wanted to play more competitive hockey then the club level that many colleges offer. The ACHA is the highest level of collegiate hockey before scholarships can be offered. From 2001-2007 the team played in several different conferences of the ACHA trying to find its mark. In 2008 the team hired Jody Rosen as their new Head Coach. Coach Rosen wanted to relaunch the program to bring the program up to the standards it needed to be at to play at the competitive Division 1 level of the ACHA. That same year the team named was changed to the UB Lady Ice Bulls along with new colors and new uniforms. The team sat out the 2008-09 season for the team to rebuild. In 2009-2010 Coach Rosen moved the team to the East Coast Womens Hockey League (ECWHL) of the ACHA. It was the teams first full year playing Division1 hockey after sitting out the previous season. It  was very successful year. The team finished  ranked 13th in the country (10-12-2-1) and finished in 2nd place in the ECWHL playoffs. It was the teams most successful season in school history. The team ended up with several honors the program had never seen before. Players Kathryn Pecora, Katelyn Bothwell, and goaltender AJ Sliwinski were named honorable mention All-Americans. Sliwinski was even named the ECWHL playoffs MVP. Coach Rosen is continuing to build a highly competitive ACHA D1 hockey program for the 2010-2011 season and the team hopes to top the accomplishments of the previous season in its quest for a National Championship.
